Loreto Town, Conero Coast and Marches Region
Loreto
Loreto, with the largest Marian shrine in Italy, has always been a place of pilgrimage and tourist destination famous all over the world. Inside the Shrine is kept the Holy House of Nazareth where, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary received the Annunciation.
The legend tells that the House of Nazareth was transported by angels in flight to escape from the invasion of Palestine by the followers of Mohammed. Signorelli, Melozzo from Forlì, Lotto and Bramante, are only few of the most famous Renaissance artists that took part in the construction of the Cathedral.
